Parents, Teens, and Internet Safety

A fun-filled presentation on internet dangers, social media, and online privacy.

This is an online version of a presentation I gave at my high school alma mater. The presentation discusses internet dangers, social media, and online privacy issues for both teens and parents. Some of the dangers in here I have personally lived through with my teens. Others, I am grateful that I have not experienced them.

My hope is to give a balanced view of internet safety so that parents and teens can see eye to eye on keeping each other safe.

Check it out and tell me what you think in the comments.

A thought on Facebook for teens

For those of you debating on whether to let your teen have a Facebook account, please don’t just consider your child’s age. Consider your child as a whole. Are they mentally and emotionally ready for the type of exposure that will get on Facebook? The teenage years are hard enough already offline. You should consider how much complicated it will become with them online as well. It should not be a blanket “yes” for all teens just because they are old enough. As you know from adults, age is nothing but a number. And a person doesn’t automatically matures when the clock strikes midnight on their birthday. Just some food for thought for all the parents.
